Lets have a bit of a rant first..... I know that 'progress' is inevitably preceded by a 'backward-step' - but...

Rant:

I was the Dog's Boll*cks at Lotus 1-2-3 Macros and Clipper Applications in the mid-80's to early 90's - I could provide a solution to any group of 1 to 30 or 40 people!!.. and did!!

Then along came Microsoft with f*cking Windows and everything went back a few years, complexity increased, users had to cut and paste everything - they couldn't "automate" - neither could I!! Ever tried writing an Excel Macro or tried to use DAO or ADO database connections??

So the last 7 or so years of my "working career" were less technical - and more "supporting"... "oh - you've got a blue screen?? - I'll be right there" - Reboot!! Or, "I'm the man for your Y2K problems".

And then I retired and decided I wanted to write programs that I enjoyed - and make use of the Internet (maybe)..

I looked at Java first - because its free, THE language for the Internet, and "open" - after about 6 months I gave up with it - because:

bulletIt's too open... what I mean is..
bulletThere are a million sites on the Internet saying "Java 'buzz-word' is what you need for 'some other buzz-word" - for example "Java Swing is what you need for Windows-like Controls"
bulletAnd before you know it, you've decided that "buzz-word" is what you need - have downloaded 84Mb of it...
bulletAnd then found it needs - "buzz-word-44" etc..etc..
bulletAfter 16 weeks - your hard drive is full - and you still cannot produce an Application!!

So I turned to Microsoft Visual Basic - because only one Company was saying "use this" (even though that was bloody confusing too).. and have been able to produce some workable Excel/Windows Macros and lots of Visual Basic Applications.

I am nowhere near as "productive" as I was back in the 80's - but hey - I'm retired - take it easy Mon!!

So - off you go - enjoy.... what has been (on occasions) - very frustrating for me - you'll probably enjoy it all the more now!!

Update!! Update!!..... August 2006......

Still VERY happy with OpenOffice and over the last couple of years have developed lots (of Visual Basic applications), also Excel Macros (I am a whizz at them now!!) also some Access applications - and just recently from early 2006 - Simon Walker has allowed me space etc.. on his server - so have duplicated some of my web-sites onto there (http://mikecurley.simoncjwalker.net/index.html) - and am now developing PHP applications... whhooooooEEEeeeee!!
