I've been very dispirited by the Internet. Great claims... and poor on delivery.. what do I mean..??

I have this FREE Website - many thanks to netfirms.com but here are some of the things I cannot do:

	Get it recognisable by search-engines - because there isn't any content that is money-making for them - see below
	Post .asp or .exe or any Server-side applications/Pages
	Offer downloads (see below), or any sort of two way communication except "leave a message" - which is crude

I'd hoped to be able to write small Net Applications, and put them on my web-site for download and use by anybody who needed/wanted them. I can write the applications and get them working on my PC with Personal Web-Server acting like I actually have a Server, but then problem two above occurs.

Other disasters are of course:

	Spam - hooray Hotmail Filter puts all my Incoming mail into the Junk Mailbox, and transfers only those Senders I've identified to my Inbox.
	I think I've got rid of some Spam and some Ads by installing Ad Aware which gets rid of those Spyware programs that spy on your surfing and report back

Update on Search Engines:

Hooray - Google and Yahoo (and maybe others) are now (December 2002) recognising my web-sites. I have done nothing different in the last 6 or 8 months to promote them - so my experience shows that rather than waiting 6 weeks for search-engines to "register" your site - be prepared to wait 2 years!!

Update.. Update!! As at 1st Feb, 2003 - I take it all back... Google etc have de-listed my web-site and it is now not found with any search criteria - bastards!! There is only one excuse... the web-site was well bollixed up around 17th January - if they were 'crawling' then - I may forgive them... but I don't reckon so.

Update on Downloads:

Well done Wally Pears!! He's told me how to do it!! Go to Download Central to try it out...

All I needed to do (January 2003), was Zip up whatever I wanted to offer as a download (or I could have just named it something that Netfirms would allow onto their Servers - not .exe or .com etc..) and publish it to my web-site. Then, in Download Central insert a Hyperlink to that file.... easy!!

Silly me... I'd seen these offerings of Web-Components.. "insert a Visitor Counter or other such gizmo into your web-site" - and reckoned I needed a "download" web component - so for a couple of years (nearly) - I've been searching for them - bloody difficult entering "download" + "web component" into a Google Search.. still even that wasn't as difficult as what I was attempting - looking for something that doesn't exist!
